Niko Interface framework
Niko today has more digital touch points than ever before: installers and end users use the Niko interfaces to configure and operate Niko Home Control and other applications.
Although these applications can be very different, Niko still wanted to develop a consistent Niko experience, which allowed sufficient flexibility to make the typical functionalities of the various products stand out.
How we tackled the challenge
We started with an investigation into the essential values of Niko; For the first time designers and developers were asked to name the design principles that they intuitively use and to explain the underlying reasons. In a few iterations we translated this into concrete general guidelines. Then, together with various users, we searched for the needs and thinking patterns of each persona and the specific characteristics of the various applications. We devoted a lot of attention to the development of appropriate interactions, transitions and animations to use throughout the applications. Converting all this into the appropriate graphical elements for the Niko house style led to a global interface framework, which is now used as a guide by interface designers, developers and programmers. We developed the framework in close collaboration with all future users: designers, developers, but also installers, architects and construction workers. Interviews, observations, co-creation and iterations with prototypes gave these users a clear voice during the project.
A user friendly interface, consistent with the brand
The new Niko interfaces are user-friendly, consistent with Niko’s brand identity and yet fully adapted to the functionalities for which they are used.
The impact we made
The interface framework not only ensures a consistent Niko visual identity: users who combine different Niko applications will appreciate the consistency in their operations.
Internally, communication about the corporate identity became a lot easier. A web tool collects the guidelines, explains their origin and illustrates them with examples of already launched applications. This ensures a strong increase in efficiency, both during the training of new employees and during the briefing of external partners.
The most far-reaching result of this project is undoubtedly the awareness of the importance of the differences between the seemingly similar users. In addition, much respect was given to each other’s know-how and input during a project. This also led to a better understanding of each other’s requirements to bring tasks to a successful conclusion. People from different departments involve each other faster in their work and work together more closely. As a result, prototypes are tested with the right criteria, decisions are founded and supported, and no time is wasted on the development of features that have to be revised afterwards.
