COMMUNITY
OF PRACTICE

INNOVATED
BY DESIGN
COLOGNE ’24

The first edition of the Community of Practice Innovated by Design Cologne starts January 26th, '24

The CoP Innovated by Design is an excellent program for innovation managers who want to deepen their understanding of best practices in design research, business model innovation, impact evaluation and developing the innovative organisation. The program includes six days over one year, with a focus on theory and expertise during the morning sessions and a focus on applying the theory and exchange of experiences in the afternoon.

DAY 1

26|01|24

BECOME THE EPIC DESIGNER OF OUR TOMORROWS

Design driven innovation serves us better, as it requires us to have an outside-in approach and build empathy towards beneficiaries and other stakeholders. The EPIC Design Model serves us as a guidance to build that empathy and keep our focus on the impact we want to make. The model also help to develop the right processes and grow the needed character in our organisation.

Jan Van Caneghem

We explore with Jan Van Caneghem, design researcher at WAAI and lecturer at Erasmus University Brussels

DAY 2

01|03|24

DESIGN RESEARCH SUPPORTS YOUR INNOVATION

Many tools such as design thinking or the value
proposition canvas invite us to use standard templates. For sure these are helpful, but one level deeper one finds that there are are no standard questions
to investigate who the beneficiaries are and what their context is. How can you design the necessary research iteratively and understand the context as well as the needs of your beneficiaries.

DAY 3

24|04|24

REDUCE RISK THROUGH PROTOTYPING

With the popularization of design thinking, standard templates are increasingly being used to conduct the investigation of a need or solution. Unfortunately, there are no standard questions to investigate who the beneficiaries are and what their context is. Nor can you use a few simple templates to research the environmental conditions in which your solution might add value. But how do you design that research iteratively?

Matthias

We explore prototyping with Matthias Lenssen. He is a specialist in idea generation and prototyping.

DAY 4

14|06|24

BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION DONE THIS WAY!

A business model defines the role and place of your enterprise in the network of customers, suppliers, and partners. It captures how enterprises create and deliver value in that context. Business models are not static and must meet the needs of the beneficiary and fit in the ecosystem of other players. Business Model Innovation helps you to find the best way for every innovation.

Nina Defounga

We explore business model innovation with Nina Defounga, CEO at Tom Spike

DAY 5

30|08|24

THE INNOVATIVE CHARACTER OF AN ORGANISATION

Start-ups are built around an innovation. Testing, failure and iterative development is in their DNA. But how do I do I develop the innovation nature of a larger organization with a long history? How do I create a safe space where innovation can thrive?

We learn from Katharina Kunz, founder of the management consultancy K2

DAY 6

27|09|24

THE TRUE STORY OF INNOVATION

Every innovation story is different. Today we share some of these stories and learn from the successes, the pivots, the hurdles, … of others. We reflect these stories to the EPIC model and elaborate how this helps to be better prepared for the next unique innovation story in our future.

Tom Maes helps companies to improve the way they operate by applying innovation techniques.
